Kentucky Organic Cooking with Miss Dixie

Miss Dixie's Organics is a family organic business combining the efforts, love and hard work of generations. Our family brings your family delicious organic muffins and brownie mixes with other mixes in development. We promise to produce and offer the highest possible quality organic baking mixes; support organic farmers and green companies that place the environment first; educate consumers about the value of organic farming to the environment and organic food to their health; and feel good about our products and our business and what we are contributing to our earth.

Why go organic?

Many crop pesticides and sprays can exterminate everything including microbiotic activity in the soil. The soil then becomes only a growing medium without fertility, nutrients or resistance to pests and diseases. These elements missing from the soil must all be synthetically added, seriously affecting the ecosystem that supports plant life and health.

Organic agriculture builds the health of the soil, providing the foundation for healthy crops and a livelihood for good stewards of the land. In order to be certified organic, crops must be grown on land that is free of prohibited substances for at least three years prior to harvest. Certified organic food has no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, or additives, no genetically modified ingredients, and no irradiation in growth or production.

The result is better ecology-enriched, drought-resistant soil, less soil erosion, less groundwater pollution, improved farm biodiversity...and tastier, more nutritious food. Organic farming helps prevent topsoil erosion, improves soil fertility, protects groundwater, and conserves energy. There is mounting evidence that organically grown fruits, vegetables and grains may offer more of some nutrients, including vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus, and less exposure to nitrates and pesticide residues than their counterparts grown using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.

Organic farms support and nurture our beautiful and diverse wildlife. Because organic practices help safeguard the environment and protect habitats, organic production conserves and promotes species diversity. Some reports have found that organic farms had five times as many wild plants in arable fields and 57% more species. The organic farms also had 25% more birds at the field edge, 44% more in-field in autumn and winter, and 2.2 times as many breeding skylarks and higher skylark breeding rates. In addition, they had 1.6 times as many of the invertebrate arthropods that make up bird food; three times as many non-pest butterflies in the crop areas; one to five times as many spider numbers, and one to two times as many spider species. They also showed a significant decrease in aphid numbers.

Proud to be small!

We are very proud of the integrity and purity of our production techniques. We take great care in making high quality products. Mass production isn't our goal. Organic food production is based on a system of farming that maintains and replenishes soil fertility without the use of toxic or persistent pesticides and fertilizers. Organic foods are minimally processed without artificial ingredients, preservatives or irradiation to maintain the integrity of the food.

Miss Dixie's Organics is a family business combining the efforts, love and hard work of a native Kentucky family. We are dedicated to producing and offering fine, wholesome foods that are the best possible for you and the environment. We can all make a difference by choosing wholesome foods - good for our bodies and souls as well as the earth. Please join us in this mission and choose organic!

Our founder, Harry Carl, started by making jams, dressings and other sauces and mixes for local Kentucky companies. Harry started to make his own line of "Harry's Choice" premium Chocolate Sauces in small kettle batches. This unique product was the result of over 45 years of custom formulation by Harry Carl. With the introduction of Miss Dixie's Organics, Harry's son, Robert, continues the family's tradition of producing fine foods.
